Abdilatif Abdalla receives the Prize on behalf of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o

Kenyan-born writer and cultural scholar Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o will be awarded this year's Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize in the Peace Hall of the historic Town Hall of Osnabrück on Friday, 29 November. The city of Osnabrück announced in May that the award would go to Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o for his work Decolonising the Mind and the impulses for the self-determination of African peoples that is connected to it. This year's special award will go to the Initiative Sea-Watch e.V. for its commitment to civil sea rescue.

Due to illness, the award winner will not be able to accept his prize in person, as was reported a few days ago.

At the ceremony the award will be accepted by Abdilatif Abdalla on behalf of wa Thiong'o. Abdalla is a Kenyan poet and publicist. He is considered one of the most famous Swahili poets of our time and has been teaching Swahili at the University of Leipzig since 1995. He is a very good friend of wa Thiong'o, many joint projects connect the two. At the request of the main award winner, Abdalla will accept the prize and read a brief address from Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o.

It has not yet been confirmed if Abdilatif Abdalla will also be able to take part in the panel discussion on the evening prior to the award ceremony.
