On 10th October 2013 Wolfgang Griesert was directly elected Lord Mayor of Osnabrück, after winning the final ballot on 6th October. He was then sworn in at the Council meeting on 21st October 2013 by Mayor Burkhard Jasper.
Born on 6th October 1957 in Krefeld, Germany, Griesert studied architecture at the University of Dortmund and, until his election as Lord mayor, had worked as a construction assessor ever since. During the course of his professional career, he worked in different executive functions in local government in Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia (among others Kiel and Krefeld).
From 1st June 2005 until 31st May 2013 Griesert was head of Osnabrück’s department of Construction and Environment. Since 2009 he has also been responsible for the Department of Citizen and Regulation as well as the fire brigade. As a full-time councillor Griesert is part of the administration board; in 2012 and 2013 he represented the Lord Mayor.
Temporarily, Griesert was responsible for the department of city development and integration as well as the departments of children, teenagers and families, the community college, the Osnabrück Service-Enterprise and the department of justice.
Griesert has previously represented the city of Osnabrück as a member of the Ecology Committee of the German Association of Cities, at the European Committee, Economy and Transport, Ecology Committee, Urban Planning Committee, at the Task Force of the Head of the Municipal Planning and Building Control Office for Lower Saxony as well as at the Task Force of Environment Protection for Lower Saxony.
Further, Griesert is involved in clerical welfare and social work of the Protestant church district in Osnabrück, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Osnabrück as well as the Friends of the Botanical Garden Osnabrück. Also, he is part of the International Association of Historical Towns in the German-speaking World, the main committee of Forum City and he is also a member of the Chamber of Architects Lower Saxony, the Society for the Promotion of Osnabrück Peace Talks, Family Alliance Osnabrück and in the citizen association Darum, Gretesch, Lüstringen.
Since 1986 Griesert has been married to his wife Maria-Elisabeth, with whom he has three children.
